Laptop VS Desktop "The Gaming Dilemma"

June 22, 2016

A lot of people come to me and have it in their head that they want a gaming laptop.  I always ask the same question, “why a laptop instead of a PC?”  Don’t get me wrong, I build both custom laptops and desktops but I want my customers to know the pros and cons of all things they buy.

For instance, a gaming laptop will cost a lot more than a desktop and you don’t get the same spec.  Yes, laptops are great for carrying around.  However, if you intend on playing games on a laptop you must have it plugged into the mains for your graphics card to work.  Without it, you will be using on-board graphics.  On-board has come a long way, don’t get me wrong, but for a gamer, it simply is not up to par.

A desktop can offer you so much for the budget you have, and when you need to upgrade or repair, the parts are cheaper!  Plus, the fact you have some very nice cases and mods to make it your own style!

Like for like comparison (or as close as I could get):

An i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, Geforce 960 GTX 2GB, 2 TB HDD, DVD +/- RW with Windows 10 runs about £690.     (Desktop, tower only)

An i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, Geforce 960 GT 2GB, 1TB HDD, DVD +/- RW, 15.6” screen with Windows 10 runs about £895

Some may say, “oh but I would have to buy a monitor, keyboard and mouse separately with the tower.  That would be true.  However, if you are a real gamer you will want more control over what you can do with your mouse and not rely on a touch pad anyway.  You will also prefer a keyboard that is sturdy and can take hours on end of hitting A, S, D and W to move about etc.  Laptops are just not built for this.  Also, you can pick up a nice clear monitor for under £100 depending on size and brand.  Even if you add in a monitor and some nice peripherals you can budget more for your money for the same price as the laptop and get more out of it for what you want and let’s face it, all of us gamers want the same things:

Sharp graphics

Quick Response

Room to store games

*and that is just naming a few*

Take it from an old school gamer, if you have the room for a PC, invest.  You will not regret it and your life will be more enjoyable when you play your games!
