All AC Adapters are NOT Created Equal…

One of the most confusing aspects of mobile computing for most people is the AC adapter.  Why is this confusing you ask?  Don’t you just plug it in and go?  Well, its not actually quite that simple.

The AC adapter is what is what gives a charge to your battery, to power your laptop.  It can also bypass your battery and directly power your device.  Most adapters are comprised of two components.  The power adapter and the power cord.  The power cord is what plugs into the wall, then into the power adapter.  The power adapter then converts the incoming electricity into the correct voltage/amperage for your device.

When replacing your AC adapter, there are 3 things you need to look for:

  1. Make sure the voltage is correct!  Using an adapter with the wrong voltage can damage your laptop!  This is the most important stat of the adapter.

  2. Make sure the amperage is as close to the original as possible.  You have some leeway here, so if its over its not a problem.  Just make sure its never under the original amperage or you could damage your device!

  3. Finally you need to ensure that the adapter has the correct plug end.  Trying to force an ill fitting plug into your device could result in a costly DC jack repair or possibly even a mother board replacement.

Caution- be wary of power leads and batteries been sold online, especially on eBay and amazon, so may not be genuine, approved or even tested. We always recommend buying a power lead from a brick and motor store. We have seen numerous times where cables are not fit for sale and have even caused fires and electrocution.

Of course, the BEST way to ensure you have the correct adapter, is to ask the advice of your local computer support technician at Chips Computers!  We are expert in all of the major brands of laptops including Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, and Toshiba.
