What is a Hard Drive?

“A hard disk drive (HDD; also hard drive or hard disk) is a non-volatile, random access digital magnetic data storage device. It features rotating rigid platters on a motor-driven spindle within a protective enclosure. Data is magnetically read from and written to the platter by read/write heads that float on a film of air above the platters. Introduced by IBM in 1956, hard disk drives have decreased in cost and physical size over the years while dramatically increasing in capacity.”

When it comes to PC hard drives (HDs), they mainly come in two connection types: the older standard IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) , and the current standard SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment). You typically find older systems use the IDE type connector.

The New Replacement to hard drives are called SSD (Solid State Drive).  These drives have no moving parts, using technology similar to flash drives to store your data.  SSDs also come with the SATA type connector.  The advantage of using an SSD is speed.  Using an SSD  as your boot drive can dramatically shorten your computers start-up time as well as can increase the general speed of your computers operation!

Upgrading your hard drive is an easy way to increase the usable life of your system.  Simply determine your storage needs and pick your size.  Hard drives as big as four Terabyte (4000 Gigabytes) are getting more common these days.
